Fire & Security Servicing Project Helps University Students Stay Safe on Campus

Jackson Fire & Security has gone back to university over the summer to complete a thorough servicing project for one of the North West’s leading universities.

As the fire and security alarm maintenance provider for the University of Chester, we have been hard at work ensuring the campus fire and security systems continue to be in full working order before students return to their studies.

Two of our engineers worked throughout July to service systems on more than 210 properties on the University estate in Chester and Warrington.

The work, which takes place every six months, includes servicing of the estate’s fire and intruder alarms systems with some CCTV and extinguisher work.

Account Manager David Clegg said: “We retain a regular presence on site until the work is complete, helping ensure the safety and security of both the students and the University’s estate.

“The project takes about six weeks to complete. Even though it’s the summer and the students are largely away, some are still on site, and many rooms are also leased out for conferencing, so we have to keep that in mind and minimise disruption for people that are still living and working on campus.”

Jackson Fire & Security has been supplying fire and intruder alarm system maintenance services to the University since August 2012.

As a supplier to the University, Jackson Fire & Security have also successfully bid for various installation projects which include for the installation of the Siemens Cerberus Pro fire alarm systems at various sites across campus. The product’s zero false alarm guarantee has vastly reduced the number of false alarms recorded.

David said: “Steam, deodorants and aerosols can all set off fire alarm systems, and when you have 1850 student rooms, little things like that can really cause a problem.

“The University was getting numerous call-outs to false alarms, but the installation of the Cerberus Pro system has really made a huge difference.  Where these systems have been installed, the incidents of false alarms has reduced significantly.

“We also provide a 24/7 call out service for the University, whereby we liaise with the porters on site to establish the cause of any alarm and meet them on site within the hour.”

Another round of servicing will take place over the University’s Christmas break.

Steve Ryan, the University’s Deputy Director of Estates and Premises, said: “Over the last three years we’ve formed a fantastic partnership with Jackson Fire & Security.

“The installation of the Cerberus Pro system has made a huge difference in terms of reducing the number of false alarms recorded on University grounds.

“When they’re needed for corrective call outs, their engineers are always prompt and knowledgeable about any issues, and are extremely professional and courteous while on campus.

“Jackson Fire & Security has been excellent to work with, and have proved to be a valued and reliable contractor to the University.”
